And the Parisian authorities imposed a muzzle on the street, and on the occasion of the New Year, announced that cafes would be closed, Saturday and Sunday, the first and second of January, at 02:00 local time.

Cut back on festivities

In Greece, cafes and restaurants will close at midnight. It will be allowed to open its doors on New Year’s Eve until 2 am. And there will be no big feasts on New Year’s Eve in Greece, which recorded, on Wednesday, a new record number of injuries, amounting to 28,828 new cases. From Thursday, until the middle of next month, the number of people gathered around tables in restaurants will be limited to six people at most.

In Spain, festivities were canceled in most regions. And nine of the country’s 10 most populous cities will not hold the campanadas, the ringing of bells at the New Year. But Madrid will organize the ceremony within a minimum ceremony in the famous Puerta del Sol, with a limited attendance of 7,000 people, with a mask on.

For his part, Pope Francis will not make his traditional New Year’s visit to the Grotto of Saint Peter’s Square, on Friday, due to the dangers posed by this type of gathering, the Vatican announced.

In Mexico, the city council canceled New Year’s celebrations, while Cyprus banned dancing in public places.

And in Germany, where clubs will remain closed tonight on New Year’s Eve, German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach warned that the new restrictions that came into force on Tuesday “will not be enough” against the mutant “Omicron”.

Currently, “Omicron” has caused a sharp rise in infections with “Covid-19” in several European countries, some of which have recorded record numbers since the beginning of the epidemic.
