The government says there are enough doses to vaccinate the entire population
Ecuador announced that receiving the Covid-19 vaccine will be mandatory for most citizens, saying that this measure is necessary due to the increase in infections and the spread of mutant such as Omicron.
The Ministry of Health said there were enough doses to “immunize the entire population”.
Those with a medical justification will be exempted.
All people aged five years and over should be vaccinated.
To date, two doses have been given to 77.2% of the eligible population.
More than 900,000 people received a booster dose.
The ministry said that vaccines are a “protective shield” against the virus, and help prevent severe disease, hospitalization and reduce the death rate.
She added that the decision is based on the country’s constitution, in which the state must guarantee the right to health.
Austria and Germany are among other countries planning a similar move.
Ecuador has already adopted the vaccination certificates required in public places such as restaurants, cinemas, theaters and shopping malls.
It also imposed measures on travelers to try to limit the spread of Omicron, which appears to be more contagious but milder than other types of the virus.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the country has confirmed 33,600 Covid-related deaths.
