Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed on Wednesday that Ankara and Moscow had agreed not to disclose the details of joint production of the S-400 air defense system.
“Regarding the production of components for the S-400 system,” Erdogan said during a joint press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Ankara, in response to a question from a journalist: “We agreed with the Russian side not to give statements, or details.” So I can’t say anything about it right now.”
Russia began delivering the S-400 air defense systems to Turkey on July 12, 2019, based on an agreement in this regard signed in Ankara in December 2017.
The deliveries of Russian air defense systems to Turkey caused a crisis in relations between Turkey and the United States, and Washington demanded that Ankara abandon this deal in exchange for the purchase of the American “Patriot” system, threatening Turkey with delaying or even canceling the sale of its latest F-35 fighters, in addition to impose sanctions on them.
Turkey reiterates that its experience of the “S-400” system does not conflict with its obligations as a member of NATO.
