The former Speaker of the Syrian People’s Assembly, Hadiya Abbas, died in Deir Ezzor, eastern Syria, of a heart attack.
Mujib al-Dandan, a member of the Syrian People’s Assembly, told the German News Agency (dpa): “Dr. Hadiya Abbas, the former head of the Syrian People’s Assembly, died this evening, after a heart attack.”
Al-Dandan added that “Abbas is the first Syrian woman appointed to this position since the independence of Syria at the end of the forties of the last century, and she remained in her position from June 2016 until July 2017, and was dismissed from the position due to disagreements that entered the People’s Assembly, even though she is from the Baath Party bloc. In the parliament, after which Hamouda Al-Sabbagh was appointed as the current Speaker of the People’s Assembly.
It is noteworthy that Hadiya Abbas was born in 1958 and holds a doctorate in agricultural engineering from the University of Aleppo. She also served as a member of the leadership of the ruling Baath Socialist Party branch in Deir ez-Zor for several years.
