Al-Agha: This type of disease was previously only detected in adults… and treatment alone is not enough
Consultant Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Prof. Abdul Moeen Eid Al-Agha, said that the past 20 years have witnessed a significant increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes in young children and adolescents. Whether at the global or Gulf level, including our Saudi society; As this type of diabetes was previously only detected in adults; But now children’s cases are monitored at an early age for acquired causes and factors.
Coinciding with the World Diabetes Day, which falls tomorrow, Sunday, November 14, Al-Agha explained that the most prominent factors that led to the incidence of “type 2” diabetes in children is obesity. This type of diabetes is a condition that affects the way the body receives glucose, which is an important source of energy for the body. When the body develops type 2 diabetes, the body becomes resistant to the effect of insulin, which is responsible for regulating the movement of sugar in the cells of the body.
He stressed that childhood obesity has become the most prominent health challenge facing families and societies for many considerations; Including the risks posed to patients, and the psychological, social, physical and economic repercussions. There are factors behind the occurrence of obesity, namely: dietary pattern, lack of activity and movement, psychological and environmental factors, endocrine disruption, genetics, and obesity genes; Thus, not treating obesity in children at an early age leads to many problems over time, especially since children who are overweight are accustomed to eating unhealthy foods and fast food rich in calories and fats, and consuming soft drinks in abundance, and the lack of movement and sitting in front of Televisions, computers and electronic games, greatly reduce the times of sports activity; Which in turn led to the spread of obesity significantly.
Al-Agha warned that one of the most important behavioral errors that families of children with diabetes commit is their belief that treatment alone is sufficient to confront diabetes 2, and this in turn compounds the problem. With the treatment, the child with diabetes 2 must adhere to sports and diet, and be careful to control his diet; All of these things are important to maintain the blood sugar level at a normal level.
He pointed out that the negative consequences of obesity are not limited to the body only; but on the psyche of the individual; As for the health effects, they are difficulty moving and running, gallbladder diseases, digestive system diseases, menstrual disorders in girls, snoring and sleep suffocation, arterial diseases and arteriosclerosis, an increased risk of some types of cancer, high blood pressure, and joint and ligament pain.. Regarding the psychological effects, which are represented in the occurrence of psychological depression from the view of the school students and the Brotherhood that he is obese; Which may lead to hostility and unpleasant behavior, as well as delayed educational attainment, a sense of inferiority, isolation of colleagues and a tendency to loneliness, frustration, and shyness.
On how to prevent children from type 2 diabetes, Professor Al-Agha said: There are several steps; The most important of which is to accustom our children from a young age to healthy foods, such as eating a lot of vegetables and fruits, and staying away from eating sweets and foods that contain calories and high fats such as fast food, which is one of the most important factors in the spread of obesity around the world, and encouraging exercise for all members the family; As the child needs to accompany his family members with them during the period of movement and physical activity, and reduce sitting in front of television screens and electronic games, and a period of two hours a day is the most time allowed to sit, and avoid drinking carbonated water and sweetened juices; As it contains high calories, replace it with drinking water; It is very necessary for the different cells of the body, and avoid drugs that contain cortisone as much as possible, especially skin ointments.
Al-Agha said that this year’s World Diabetes Day coincides with the 100th anniversary of the discovery of the drug insulin to treat type 1 diabetes. The passage of a century is the best witness to saving millions of diabetics with insulin drug; Certainly, type 1 diabetes results from a lack of insulin, or its complete absence, due to a disorder in the immune system, which attacks beta cells; Thus, the pancreas becomes unable to produce insulin in sufficient quantities for the body, and its symptoms are: extreme thirst and hunger, frequent urination, fatigue, poor vision, and general fatigue, and the treatment of this type is by taking daily doses of insulin for life.
