A senior adviser to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed that accusing Ankara or Turkish Airlines of responsibility for the humanitarian crisis at the border between Poland and Belarus is “misleading.”
“Turkey has nothing to do with this latest crisis of illegal immigrants between Belarus, Poland, Lithuania and other European countries,” he said in an exclusive interview with AFP.

“Travelers go to Belarus and from there to Lithuania, Poland and other EU countries. Blaming Turkey or Turkish Airlines for this is simply misleading and misplaced,” he added.
On Friday, Ankara announced a ban on the travel of citizens of three countries in the Middle East to the former Soviet Republic of Belarus through Turkish airports due to the “problem of border crossings between the European Union and Belarus.”
The decision came days after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen threatened to impose sanctions on airlines that engage in “people smuggling”.
Western media reported earlier that “the European Union may impose sanctions on Turkish Airlines for transporting illegal immigrants” to Belarus.
Turkish Airlines provides one of the most widely used international routes to the Belarusian capital, Minsk.
