A new study has found that taking statin drugs does not enhance hospitalization for patients with the emerging coronavirus (Covid-19) in hospitals.
A new study shows that treatment with common “statin” drugs to lower cholesterol levels does not promote recovery in people with severe symptoms of the emerging coronavirus, but may increase their risk of death from the virus, according to the American “UBI” website.
The site indicated, in a report, that the researchers in the study had found that the use of statin drugs such as “rosuvastatin”, which is sold as Crestor, atorvastatin, or Lipitor, does not reduce the risk of corona patients dying in hospitals.
The researchers said that patients who were hospitalized with corona and took statins had an 18% higher risk of developing more severe symptoms of the virus compared to patients who did not take these drugs.
And the site quoted co-author of the study, Dr. Petros Karakosis, as saying: “Despite the clear beneficial effect of taking statins on the outcomes of various infectious diseases, our study found that using them to treat corona is not feasible.”
One plausible explanation for their finding, Karakossis said, is that these statins increase cellular production of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, the cell’s receptor, so these drugs may reduce the body’s cells’ resistance to infection.
In the study, conducted at Johns Hopkins University in the United States, and published in the journal “Plos One”, Karakossis and colleagues reviewed data on nearly 4,500 patients aged 18 or over who were hospitalized with coronavirus over a four-month period. Between March 1 and June 30 last year, 594 or 13% of participants were receiving statins at the time of their hospitalization.
The study pointed out that nearly 60% of the cholesterol-lowering drug users were men, and most of them were between 52 and 78 years old.
