France has warned of the danger of a military takeover of power in Sudan, stressing that the continuation of the constitutional document issued in 2019 is a prerequisite for continuing international support for this country.
A spokesman for the French Foreign Ministry indicated during a press briefing today, Wednesday, according to what was published on the ministry’s website, that President Emmanuel Macron had condemned in the strongest terms the coup that took place in Sudan earlier this week, expressing the concern of Paris and its partners about undermining the stability of this country.
The spokesman stated that the recent developments in Sudan “threaten the democratic openness of this country and the aspirations of its people,” adding: “We call with our European and African partners for the immediate resumption of dialogue between the political forces in the country and commitment to the balance of the transitional phase, according to what was stated in the constitutional document issued in August 2019 which It is the only basis for continued support of this country by the international community.”
The spokesman stressed that France continues to demand the Sudanese military to unconditionally release Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and other civilian leaders and respect their physical integrity.
