India has criticized China for passing a new land border law that it said “could fuel the long-standing border dispute between the two countries”.

“India expects China to avoid taking measures under the new law that would unilaterally change the situation in the border areas between India and China,” Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagshi said.

He added: “India and China agreed earlier to seek a just and mutually acceptable solution to the border dispute between them,” expressing the hope that “the law will not affect the arrangements reached by the two sides earlier on the border dispute.”

Talks between the Indian and Chinese militaries to disengage forces in key areas along their border ended in a stalemate earlier this month, failing to ease a 17-month standoff that has at times led to bloody clashes.

Chinese lawmakers approved the law at last Sunday’s meeting of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, which states that “Chinas sovereignty and territorial integrity are sacred and inviolable, and the state takes measures to safeguard territorial integrity and land borders and protect against any action that undermines territorial sovereignty and borders.” wild”.
