Vitamin D is called the “sunshine vitamin” because it is produced naturally in the body through exposure to sunlight.

It is an essential nutrient for a number of biological processes in the body. Low levels of vitamin D are linked to an increased risk of a number of other conditions, ranging from bowel cancer and multiple sclerosis to Alzheimer’s disease.

As cholesterol under the skin is converted to vitamin D, bone health and the immune system are boosted.

There is also evidence that vitamin D can reduce the likelihood of developing viral infections, including influenza.

Since the deficiency causes bone destruction, it can lead to hearing loss and tinnitus.

The NHS explains that tinnitus is “hearing sounds that are not caused by sounds from the outside world. It’s a common sign and not usually a sign of anything serious. It may get better on its own and there are treatments that can help.”

Researchers studying the role of vitamin D in subjective tinnitus revealed a link between the deficiency and the state of hearing.

In a research paper published in the journal Plos One, they wrote: “Our results indicate that a significant proportion of tinnitus patients are vitamin D deficient. We recommend a vitamin evaluation for all tinnitus patients.”

They hypothesized that vitamin D’s anti-inflammatory properties might play a role in tinnitus, or perhaps its connection to magnesium.

“Another mechanism by which vitamin D deficiency may affect tinnitus is related to magnesium,” they said.

Magnesium plays a role as a major cofactor in the formation of vitamin D. Besides, activated vitamin D can enhance the intestinal absorption of magnesium. Therefore, magnesium deficiency due to vitamin D deficiency may exacerbate tinnitus.

Vitamin D deficiency is also linked to hearing, as it affects the ear bones.

This condition, known as osteoporosis, can lead to hearing loss and deafness in some cases.

Interestingly, studies have found that correcting a vitamin D deficiency can reverse hearing loss and even deafness in some cases.
