The Kremlin comments on Zelensky’s statements on the “reclaiming” of Crimea

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky’s statement of his country’s intention to “reclaim” Crimea as “regional ambitions” against Russia and could have serious consequences.

This came today, Wednesday, in Peskov’s comment to reporters on Zelensky’s statements following the Dutch court’s decision to hand over “Scythian gold” to Ukraine, which the Ukrainian president described as “fair,” adding that after recovering the gold, “we intend to recover Crimea as well.”

“Currently, allegations of the restoration of Crimea are only evidence of territorial ambitions on the territory of Russia, and these statements may have negative consequences,” Peskov said.

Peskov added that Russia will carefully study the judicial prospects of the “Skive Gold” case and take measures to follow up on this case.

On Tuesday, the Amsterdam Court of Appeal ruled that the Scythian gold should be handed over to Ukraine, after issuing a decision as the property of the State of Ukraine and “part of the cultural heritage of Ukraine”. The Russian side announced its intention to file an appeal against this ruling.

The collection of unique pieces known as “Scyth gold”, taken from 4 museums in Crimea, was transferred to an exhibition at the Allard Pearson Museum in Amsterdam in early February 2014, that is, before Crimea joined Russia.

After the peninsula’s accession to Russia as a result of the general referendum in March 2014, all state property in its territory became the property of the Russian state automatically, but the European Union did not recognize Crimea’s subordination to Russia, and the museum decided at the time not to hand over the collection neither to Crimea nor to Ukraine before a court with powers issued a decision on this matter.
