Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II spent a night in hospital for the first time in years for what Buckingham Palace called “initial checks”, but was in good spirits and returned to work at Windsor Castle on Thursday.
The Queen, 95, canceled an official visit to Northern Ireland on Wednesday. The palace said that the Queen’s medical staff had asked her to rest and that her illness was not related to Covid-19.
“Following medical advice to rest for a few days, the Queen was admitted to hospital on Wednesday afternoon for some preliminary examinations, and returned to Windsor Castle at lunchtime today in good spirits,” the palace said late last night.
The palace did not give any details of the reason for the doctors’ advice.
A royal source said that the Queen entered King Edward VII Hospital in central London for practical reasons, and that her medical team had taken a precautionary approach.
The source added that Elizabeth, who is queen of 15 other countries including Australia, Canada and New Zealand, returned to her office to work on Thursday afternoon and did some light duties.
