Imam Musa al-Sadr, a prominent Lebanese Shiite religious figure and founder of the Amal Movement, had arrived in Libya on a visit to participate in the celebrations of the “Fateh Revolution of September”, which brought Gaddafi to power in 1969, accompanied by Sheikh Muhammad Yaqoub and journalist Abbas Badr al-Din, and they were hosted in The Beach Hotel in Tripoli, and Al-Sadr and his two companions were last seen on August 31, 1978.

The Libyan authorities announced at the time that Al-Sadr and his two companions left Tripoli on the evening of August 31 on an Italian Airlines flight to Rome, and the Italian authorities later found the bags of Al-Sadr and Sheikh Yaqoub at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Rome.
