“Long-term Covid” .. a quick American move to study the mysterious...

In order to learn more about “long-term Covid” and its possible causes and treatments, the US government plans to spend 470 million dollars, according to the National Institutes of Health in the United States.

The plans were announced Wednesday, with a grant to New York University, which aims to enroll up to 40,000 adults and children nationwide.

The effort, called RECOVER, will involve researchers at more than 30 US institutions.

“This is being taken very seriously on a scale that hasn’t really been tried with something like this,” National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins said at a news conference on Wednesday.

He added that an estimated 10 to 30 percent of people infected with the Corona virus may develop persistent, new or recurring symptoms, which may last for months or perhaps years.

“Prolonged Covid” is an umbrella term for symptoms that persist and recur, and appear for the first time 4 or more weeks after the first infection.

Pain, headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, anxiety, depression, chronic cough and difficulty sleeping are among the reported symptoms of the coronavirus.

But these symptoms may include myocarditis and multisystem inflammatory syndrome, a rare but serious condition that can occur in children after infection with Corona.

Possible causes of long-term Covid include the virus remaining in tissues and organs, or it overstimulating the immune system.
