Cairo: Sultan Qaboos Bin Said of Oman is to leave his homeland later Saturday for Belgium to undergo medical checks, the official Omani news agency reported.

“The medical tests will take a limited period,” the agency added without giving a specific time frame.

The nature of the check-ups was not immediately clear.

In March 2015, Qaboos, now aged 79, returned home from Germany where he was on a months-long medical trip.

He has been ruling Oman since July 1970. He has since transformed the Gulf country in different domains and made Oman an influential mediator in regional tensions.
