A delegation from the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) held a meeting with the Moroccan National Commission for Education, Science and Culture to review the implementation of the first tranche of the “ICESCO Program for the improvement of water, sanitation and hygiene services in 1,000 rural schools in the Islamic world”, which will benefit the following four countries: Morocco, Senegal, Mali and Uganda, underlines a press release from the Organization.

During the meeting, which took place yesterday, January 19, 2021 at the headquarters of the Moroccan Ministry of National Education, Vocational Training, Higher Education and Scientific Research, the components of this ambitious Program, through which ICESCO aims to provide safe and clean water in rural schools and to assist Member States in the implementation of their projects in remote areas. It is also a question of ensuring training and education in the adoption of healthy behaviors, of guaranteeing gender equality and of improving the education of girls by relying on innovative and sustainable techniques adapted to these areas.

The  two parties agreed to start the implementation of this program in Morocco, given its importance in the full spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, and to make the Kingdom a model in this regard. Indeed, the project is part of ICESCO’s efforts to support its Member States and effectively contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular the 6th goal, aimed at ensuring access to all to water and sanitation, and the 4th SDG aiming to guarantee access for all to quality education.

Attended this meeting, on the side of ICESCO, Zineb Iraqi, Supervisor of the General Secretariat of National Commissions and Conferences, Dr Muhammad Sharif, Advisor to the Science and Technology Sector, and Dr Foued El Ayni, expert on the same Sector and project coordinator.  

The  Moroccan National Commission was represented by Jamal Eddine El Aloua, Secretary General of the Commission, and Karim Hamidouche, of the Unit for the Management of International Cooperation Programs and Projects.
