After the pandemic’s worst day of infection, the Danish Prime Minister orders the partial closure of Copenhagen, Aarhus and Odense.

In a video on Facebook, Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen says that Odense, Aarhus and Copenhagen will partially shut down. Several municipalities around the capital and in Zealand will also be partially closed down, she says.

– We will get the infection sorted out before Christmas Eve, says the Prime Minister.

This happens on the same day as Denmark sets a new infection record, with 1,745 new infections in one day. According to the Danish Statens Serum Institut, this is the highest number of new infections in a day since the pandemic started.

– Over the weekend, we have prepared a geographical, targeted and partial closure. This will apply in the parts of the country where infection is most prevalent, she says.

She says the goal is to implement measures early, so one hopefully avoids having to close even harder “if one day it becomes too late”.

– We are in dialogue with the parliamentary parties about the situation. Tomorrow we will present the new measures. Then we will also say more about what restrictions will apply throughout the country this Christmas, New Year and the rest of the winter.

The previous infection record in Denmark was from Thursday, when 1,605 cases were registered. On Saturday, 2,115 cases were registered, but it included some figures from Friday and can therefore not be compared directly.

The fact that more and more people are being registered as infected is also due to the fact that far more people are being tested than before.

But the number of hospitalized with covid-19 also increased by 23, to 302 people. Of these, 42 are in the intensive care unit, and 26 are on a respirator.

Seven deaths from corona-related causes were also registered on Sunday.
