The decline in new corona infections in Austria continues. As of 9:30 a.m., 4,954 people had tested positive for the virus within 24 hours. "The hard lockdown works," said Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) on Friday at a press conference. Now the numbers would have to "decrease dramatically". Because now comes the annual flu wave.
Anschober said: “The second wave is much more dramatic than the first wave in Europe.” There has never been an infection development as intense as that in November in Austria: “We have reached the area, there are no more peaks.”
The number of new infections in Austria is currently 4954. According to Anschober, this is still dramatically high, although a noticeable downward trend in the numbers can be registered. On Thursday, the health and interior ministries reported 5,526 positive test results.
The hard lockdown in Austria lasted eleven days on Friday. “This works,” said Anschober and at the same time appealed to the population to take the upcoming full second lockdown week seriously. And he warned of the flu epidemic expected in December.
It is still unclear whether and how the decline in the number of infections will affect the currently hotly debated opening of the ski area. Anschober: “That will be put on the table next Wednesday (December 2nd, note).”
In the meantime, the situation has also stabilized in the hospitals. 4405 people were still hospitalized, 703 of them in intensive care units. Despite the falling numbers, Anschober spoke of a “dramatic situation” in Austria. In Austria, 113 other people died from or with Covid-19. In total, there are already 2,886 deaths in connection with the corona virus.
The intensive care doctor Klaus Markstaller (AKH Vienna) said that around 700 intensive care beds in Austria are currently occupied by Covid patients: “The situation is tense, critical, but not yet a disaster.” Markstaller justified the increase in the proportion of younger patients with the fact that “in contrast to spring, the virus has now reached the entire population.” The oldest Covid intensive care patient at the Vienna General Hospital is currently a 68-year-old man, the youngest a 19-year-old woman. Markstaller: “Covid-19 is a really serious illness for some people. There are also side effects, as we now know.”
