We journalists are trained in capitalization. It is our job to illustrate conflicts, to paint big pictures, to take advantage of the dramaturgy that lies in every story. But the story of Donald ’s four years in the White House needs no effects, no dramaturgy. It is itself enough, for a little shaky to quote Ibsen. And the question now, is whether enough is finally enough?

For the Americans. The vast majority suggests that it is. The challenger Joe Biden leads in part clearly in all opinion polls, also in the necessary tipping states that he needs to win. Nevertheless, there is great excitement associated with the result. One thing is the uncertainty that is always associated with Trump. Will he be able to spin enough voters into his golden universe of dreams and longings for America’s greatness, and trivial lies about everything and everyone? And how far is he willing to go so as not to lose?

That which lies in the pot is nothing less than the world’s oldest – and so far – functioning democracy. One should not look long to find traces of fascism in Trump’s racist populism. A group of leading fascism researchers has made an appeal on the occasion of the election in which they write that democracies are in danger, not only in the United States, but all over the world. They ask the question whether Trump is simply a fascist, a post-fascist populist, a budding autocrat, or just a particularly noisy opportunist.

List of events which emphasizes the president’s undemocratic mindset is as long as a bad year. Donald Trump has literally from day one undermined the democracy he was elected to govern. Just to remind you, it already started with the inauguration ceremony, January 20, 2017. Then he complained that the press – Fake News – reported that there were far fewer present than during Barack Obama’s ceremony eight years earlier, despite the fact that photos clearly showed that Trump was wrong. That was when Trump’s adviser Kellyanne Conway came to Trump’s rescue by explaining that the disagreement over how many people were actually present was due to what she called Trump’s ‘alternative facts.’

The Battle of the Midwest

Many of us laughed so we screamed. Now the man had to be undressed, from what appeared to be a talk that still explained most, think of, “alternative facts”. But since then, the world has put laughter in its throat. For Donald Trump just kept lying, as if he had not been taken with his pants down, and he now has an average of more than 20 lies per. day, because as we know he also takes the night to help. Black night. And then not even the lies to his wife Melania are included, because the Trump couple’s conversations are after all not part of the public exchange. It’s been a long time since there was anything funny about Donald Trump. Comical, yes, but funny, no.

To that, the reality is too serious. For the way the 45th President of the United States undermines democracy is more to be laughed at. To the extent that Trump rules, he rules by the method of whimsy. His everyday life is marked by hatred for those he perceives as his opponents, fear of being exposed as lies, and probably also as swindlers, and vengeful whims against anyone who points out his mistakes and criticizes him. Day and night, derogatory, false, and vulgar messages are pouring out on Twitter. It should sleep little whoever wants to follow.

And sleep poorly. For as a parody of a fascist-like character from a Hollywood farce, Trump has facts pompous as a little Mussolini. His communication with followers is about glorifying themselves, and the communication with his opponents is about scolding them, and telling what kind of meat hats they are. Only an America in deep crisis could elect such a president. And only an America in even greater crisis can re-elect him.

Today’s election in the United States is a referendum on the Donald. It is about the man who closed the country to Muslims from countries he did not like, locked children in cages, and separated them from their parents, introduced tax breaks for the very rich, while he himself – who does not allow one opportunity to brag about how rich he is resigning – practically not paying taxes. Cheering on militaristic neo-Nazism, the blind eye turns to police violence against blacks, sending federal forces against citizens in cities where local authorities are asking them to stay away. And that has led the people behind the light when it comes to the pandemic. Where Trump’s operetta-like nonsense could be seen by anyone who wanted to see.

Men of America Deep crisis is also about all those who do not want to see. Therefore, today’s election is a fateful choice for democracy in America. By far the most important choice in modern times. Because big words apply here, which do not need any further dramaturgy.
