Last week we gave a general overview of how Brexit would change things “in practice” in Ireland: in short, this means increased controls at ports and airports, new customs procedures for importers and exports, and additional costs when purchasing the UNITED KINGDOM.
We had some questions from readers about what Brexit will mean for them. Here is our attempt to answer some of them (we are still working on answers for other questions).
I’m moving to the UK next year – is it getting harder?
Irish citizens can continue to travel to the UK because of the rights and privileges of the Common Travel Area that precede Ireland and the UK’s membership of the European Union.
This also applies to UK citizens moving here: both can continue to live, work, study and access services, including health and education services, as is currently the case.
However, there are additional hurdles for other EU citizens coming to the UK. The UK is introducing a points-based immigration system from January 1, 2021.
Will be British Professional qualifications be recognized in Ireland?

Existing EU professional qualifications will continue to be recognized in the UK and existing UK qualifications will continue to be recognized in the EU.
This “grandfathering” measure is included in the withdrawal agreement.
But – people who apply for recognition of their qualifications for the first time from January 1, 2021 are no longer subject to the EU directive on professional qualifications.
The recognition of New UK qualifications in Ireland and the rest of the EU and vice versa will be possible after December 31, but will be based on national rules and processes and “be more complex”, according to the Irish Government.
Go to the rules of origin for Northern Ireland
The State Department has stressed that after December 31, UK products and materials (including goods from Northern Ireland) will no longer be considered “EU origin” for international trade.
This could prove particularly difficult for farmers and food producers in the island of Ireland who operate on an island basis, particularly dairy farmers.
Although Northern Ireland goods will continue to circulate freely in the EU internal market, Northern Ireland will comply with the rules of the EU Customs Code while remaining part of the UK customs territory.
When exporting outside the EU, Northern Irish goods are considered to be “British goods” for the purposes of the requirements for the rules of origin.
On security certificates
Effective January 1, 2021, UK regulators or “Notified Bodies” will no longer be allowed to certify products as EU compliant and standard for specific regulatory controls, public safety and health.
This means that UK Notified Bodies issuing a safety approval for a product now mean something different from the EU (although it is possible that the UK could in most cases adhere to the same standards as the EU).
What are my consumer rights?
EU consumer laws may no longer apply to items purchased from the UK. This means that after 14 days you may not be able to return a product.
It is recommended that you check the terms and conditions on a UK retailer’s website before purchasing.

A quick note on: The British Land Bridge
Irish freight forwarders are allowed to transport goods by Great Britain without full customs import and export formalities – whether this can be done without being stuck in traffic is a completely different question.
However, there will be new requirements (including new documentation) and there must be a financial guarantee for each shipment to cover the potential duties and other taxes that are at risk during the move.
The shippers have also been reminded by the State Department to be aware of the UK frontier operating model.
