Six more deaths and 772 new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded in the republic.

There have now been a total of 1,908 coronavirus-related deaths in the state.

Of the new cases, 64 percent affect people under 45 years of age. 228 cases are in Dublin, 120 in Cork, 50 in Meath, 41 in Donegal, 41 in Galway and the remaining 292 cases are spread across all other counties of the republic.

325 Covid 19 patients are in hospital, 42 in intensive care. There have been 15 hospitalizations in the past 24 hours.

Counties Cavan and Meath have the highest infection rates in the state.

In Cavan, the 14-day incidence rate per 100,000 population is 669.5. It is now 546.5 at Meath and 413.4 at Westmeath. The next highest counties are Sligo with 363.2 and Galway with 341.4.

The latest data shows that the infection rate in Dublin has been 251.6 cases per 100,000 people for the past two weeks, below the national rate of 287.1 and below 15 other counties.

The chief physician, Dr. Tony Holohan, noted that “the overall situation has improved” but said it was “early days”.

“This improvement will only be sustained if we continue our efforts,” he said.

“We need to remember that the incidence is increasing in older age groups who are particularly susceptible to this disease. We can protect them if we continue to reduce transmission across the population. ”

Epidemiologist Prof. Philip Nolan said the disease reproductive rate, or R-rate, is close to 1.

The R-rate measures how many people a person infected with Covid-19 on average. A rate below 1 means the virus is in decline.

Prof. Nolan said this was the first time in several weeks that “positive indicators” of the disease had been reported but that progress was “very fragile”.

“We should take these positive signs as an indication that our efforts are starting to work. The bottom line now is to maintain it. The virus will look for a way to spread, ”he said.
