French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin announced his country’s readiness to assist Ankara and Athens, following the earthquake that struck the Turkish state of Izmir and the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea.

Darmanin said in a tweet on Twitter: “A strong earthquake (Friday evening) hit Turkey and the Greek islands.”

He added, “France stands with the Turkish and Greek peoples to face this terrible ordeal.”

And he continued, “If the governments of the two countries so desired, aid can be sent to the region immediately.” According to Anadolu Agency.

Earlier Friday, a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Izmir, western Turkey, according to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management “AFAD” statement.

The statement added that the epicenter was in the Aegean Sea, 17 kilometers from the coasts of “Safri Hesar” district, of the state of Izmir, at a depth of 16.54 km.

The death toll from the earthquake in Izmir was 6 dead and 202 injured, according to an AFAD statement.
