A man who murdered a woman and seriously injured another last year pleaded guilty.
- Mert Ney pleaded guilty to murdering 24-year-old Michaela Dunn in an apartment in Sydney
- Police locked up the city when Ney took to the streets of the CBD with a knife
- Ney was treated for mental illness while in custody
Mert Ney was arrested last August after bystanders held him in a chair and milk crate while they waited for the police.
The 22-year-old was filmed running through the streets with a knife screaming during the incident, which stalled the heart of the city.
Ney was charged with the murder of 24-year-old Michaela Dunn and the serious wounding of Lin Bo, then 41.
Prosecutors and defense attorneys have been negotiating a plea since mid-September.
In the Central Local Court, Ney pleaded guilty to murdering Ms. Dunn, wounding Ms. Bo, and assaulting his sister.
His lawyer, Zemarai Khatiz, told the court that one drug possession charge will be deemed convicted, while six other charges will be withdrawn.
Ney appeared via video link and spoke in a clear voice when asked how he would plead.
Ney visited Ms. Dunn for a sex work appointment before she was killed, police said.
Ms. Dunn’s body was found in a unit on Clarence Street.
According to the Scarlet Alliance’s Australian Sex Workers Association, Mr. Ney had seen Ms. Dunn at least once before.
The plea deal comes after a judge expressed frustration at delays on the matter, including from Ney’s defense team who wanted more time to consult a psychologist and get a report.
At least 1,500 pages of material on Ney’s circumstances have been produced by Justice Health and other organizations.
The court previously heard that Ney’s attorneys were considering improving his sanity and aptitude to speak.
Mr. Ney was previously treated for mental health problems. He presented at Blacktown Hospital a few days before the incident but checked himself in six hours later.
He was treated for pain, mental illness and problems such as insomnia while in detention.
The case will return to court in December.
