Covid-19. Group of attackers tries to set fire to the...

Berlin police are investigating an attack on a building that belongs to the Robert Koch Institute, the government agency responsible for disease control and monitoring the pandemic situation in Germany.

According to the authorities, quoted by AFP, “several people still to be identified” were seen during the night of this Saturday throwing “incendiary devices” and bottles against the building. The attack caused a small fire, which was extinguished by the security guard. The incident caused minor damage to the facade, including broken glass. It did not cause injuries.

The police did not rule out possible political motivations, taking into account the role played by the institute in the daily communication of the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic in Germany, says AFP.

The new preventive measures taken by the German government following the increase in the number of cases in the country led to a new wave of protests. This Sunday, about two thousand people gathered in Berlin for a demonstration that coincided with the start of a three-day summit of the World Health Organization (WHO) that was supposed to take place in the city. During the meeting, held online, the Covid-19 pandemic will be discussed, among other topics.

The protest was eventually dispersed by the authorities, because the protesters did not follow the rules of social distance and did not wear a mask.

The Robert Koch Institute announced on Sunday 11,176 new cases of infection with the new coronavirus and 29 deaths. The country has recorded more than ten thousand daily cases for four days. The mortality rate is now 2.3%. So far, 429,181 cases of Covid-19 and 10,032 deaths have been confirmed in the country.
