The elections come at a time when OPEC member Kuwait is facing a liquidity crisis caused by low oil prices, as well as the Corona pandemic. The government is trying to work to bridge the budget deficit.
The Emir of Kuwait said: “Our national unity has proven over the years that it is rightly our most powerful weapon in facing challenges, dangers and crises.”
“We affirm our continuation of the approach of the late Emir … and affirm our commitment to democracy, the constitution and the rule of law,” he added at the opening of the fifth regular session of the supplementary National Assembly.
Frequent disagreements between the cabinet and parliament led to successive ministerial reshuffles and the dissolution of parliament more than once, which hindered efforts to promote investment and reform.
On Monday, the Kuwaiti cabinet approved a draft decree to hold parliamentary elections on December 5, but the Emir must agree to this.
On the other hand, Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah delivered a speech before the session, in which he said that Kuwait will continue “endeavors to end the disagreement between brothers and support the Gulf Cooperation Council.”
He said, “On the level of our Gulf work, we will continue our good endeavors to end the disagreement that arose between the brothers, which weakened our unity and harmed our gains, and we will continue to work to support the Cooperation Council for the Arab Gulf States.”
Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt cut political, trade and transport links with Qatar in mid-2017, accusing it of supporting terrorism. Doha denies the accusations and says the ban is aimed at undermining its sovereignty.
Sheikh Sabah also affirmed, “Kuwait’s commitment to stand by the Palestinian people, support their options, and our support for all efforts aimed at reaching a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue.”
The UAE and Bahrain recently concluded agreements mediated by the United States to establish normal relations with Israel, in the first step of its kind by countries in the Gulf region.
