George Clooney reveals that he almost starred in The Notebook with...

But George Clooney revealed during a virtual interview with Deadline on Sunday that he almost starred in the popular romance The Notebook.

The 59-year-old actor originally planned to star, which would later go to Ryan Gosling, while his friend Paul Newman would play him as an older man.

“We wanted to do The Notebook together,” Clooney said. “Basically I wanted to play him as a young man, and it was fun. We met and said, “This is it. It is going to be great.”

But his excitement subsided when he watched some of the Cool Hand Luke star’s greatest films and realized he wasn’t going to be a believable younger version of Newman.

“He’s one of the prettiest guys you’ve ever seen. We met [again] and I said, “I can’t play you. I don’t look like you. This is crazy, ”he continued.

Clooney didn’t say when he and Newman considered starring in The Notebook, but the novel Nicholas Sparks was published in 1996 and the rights to it were acquired that same year.

The film was released almost a decade later in 2004, with Ryan Gosling in the role that Clooney saw for himself opposite Rachel McAdams.

Newman’s role was played by James Garner, while McAdams’ age-old character was played by Gena Rowlands.

Newman, who had been a heavy smoker until the mid-1980s, died of lung cancer in 2008 at the age of 83.
