Poverty and price freezing. The Venezuelanization of Argentina

Argentina decided to make a risky bet in the last elections: it replaced Mauricio Macri, who was trying his second term, with Kirchnerist Alberto Fernández. The reasons for the loss of support among the population are several: even after forcing the Argentine people to stay locked up at home for months, the country registered an acceleration in the number of cases, and is now the fifth with the highest number of infected, behind only Russia, Brazil, India and the United States.

The confinement, in addition to being useless, has further shaken the already broken Argentine economy. The country has been in recession since 2018, and the poverty rate reached 40.9% of the population in the first half of 2020, with an indigence rate of 10.5%. As a comparison, at the end of 2019 the indexes were 35.5% and 8%, respectively.

If all this was not enough, forest fires have already hit 15 provinces in the country this year. The worst situation is in the province of Córdoba, where the destruction is the worst in the last ten years.

And, even more worrying, is the proposal to reform the judiciary that is being driven by Vice President Cristina Kirchner. One proposal is to increase the number of judges on the Supreme Court from the current five to nine, giving the current government a chance to appoint four judges.

Was Argentina going through a process of venezuelization, with the instrumentalization of the judiciary and the impoverishment of its people? Columnists of People’s Gazette Rodrigo Constantino and Guilherme Fiuza receive João Alfredo Lopes Nyegray, lawyer trained in International Relations and coordinator of the Foreign Trade course at Positivo University, to discuss the topic.
