The iPhone 12 can be pre-ordered in Austria from domestic mobile operators since Friday. It will be delivered for the first time from October 23, 2020 at all mobile phone providers in the range. Austria’s largest mobile communications comparison portal tarife.at has analyzed which hardware tariff combinations for mobile operators and SIM-only variants are the cheapest.

AUSTRIA. Apple’s new high-end smartphone has been offered by domestic mobile operators since Friday afternoon – including the largest providers A1, Magenta and Drei. These network operators are currently the only mobile phone brands that already offer 5G-compatible tariffs. The prices of the iPhone usually depend on both the desired memory size and the tariff with which the iPhone is purchased. According to the mobile network comparison portal tarife.at, the rule of thumb is: the higher the tariff, the cheaper the iPhone.

5G tariffs at a glance

So offers about A1 the iPhone 12 (64 GB, black) in the cheapest 5G tariff “5Giga Mobil S” for a one-off 119 euros. The tariff itself costs EUR 74.90 per month (EUR 64.90 for A1 Internet customers). The data speed in the 5G network is limited to 100 Mbit per second. At Magenta the same device is available with the cheapest 5G tariff “Mobile Gold” for 291 euros including copyright fee. If you already have an existing Magenta (or old UPC) contract, MagentaEINS reduces the monthly basic fee by ten euros to 50 euros per month. The tariff allows data speeds of up to 250 Mbit per second in Magenta’s 5G network. Calculated over the contract period of two years, the total costs for the iPhone including tariff and additional fees are 1785 euros.

Three sends the cheapest 5G tariff into the race with “Perfect Unlimited”, which is available for 59.90 euros per month. With this tariff, the iPhone costs 237 euros. Here, too, you get unlimited data volume in the 5G network of Drei with up to 300 Mbit per second. Calculated over a contract period of two years, this results in total costs for the iPhone including tariff and additional fees of 1738.60 euros.

Not using 5G saves up to 752 euros

5G-compatible tariffs are currently only offered by the network operators themselves, but not by virtual mobile network providers (MVNO) or discounters such as HoT, yesss! or spusu. If you don’t necessarily want to use your iPhone with a 5G network, you can save a lot, according to tarife.at: On average, consumers save 611 euros in two years if they buy the iPhone 12 with 64 GB of storage and a suitable LTE tariff separately. The maximum savings are up to 752 euros. Maximilian Schirmer, managing director of tarife.at: “5G-compatible tariffs are currently exclusively in the premium area. If you want to get the most out of your new iPhone, you have to dig deep into your pocket this year. But if you can do without the increased 5G surfing speed and unlimited data volume, one of the more than 350 different LTE tariffs that are currently offered in Austria will be cheaper ”.

The comparison platform expects the iPhone 12 to drop significantly in price in the coming months. For example, the price for the iPhone 11 fell two months later for Magenta from 360 to 0 euros and for A1 to 100 euros after it went on sale in September.
