The country has seen another surge in coronavirus cases after 1,000 new infections were reported tonight.

In the meantime, another 3 people have died of Covid-19.

The latest numbers come after it was revealed that NPHET gave the government a recommendation today for level 5 lockdown restrictions.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin said today Level 5 would have “huge economic consequences” for the country.

Mr. Martin told reporters, “This is obviously very serious advice. It has to be looked at correctly and people have to be given clarity about it. ”

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar said a second suspension is more difficult than the first, adding that people “want to know what the exit strategy is”.

“A second lockdown will be difficult for people and some companies may not survive,” he said.

“Many people who found social isolation difficult in spring might find it more difficult with darker days and the weather.”

Meanwhile, health experts continue to express concerns about the continued rise in Covid cases across the country.

On today’s cases, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan: “The number of cases continues to grow.

“At the moment everyone has to reduce their social contacts to an absolute minimum. Every time you physically interact with another person, you are offering an opportunity for the virus to spread. ”

Dublin remains the epicenter of the virus with over 250 reported cases in the capital. However, very high numbers were also recorded in Meath, Cork and Galway.
