Saturday
will bring a lot of dry weather across the country, but there will be temporary showers, especially in the east. Generally a fair amount of cloud, but some sunny patches are expected. Later in the day, a thickening cloud brings outbursts of rain in the extreme southwest. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees with mostly moderate easterly winds, occasionally fresh in the southwest.

Sunday will be quite cloudy at times with rain or showers. The rain will continue later on Sunday, particularly along the southern coastal areas. The temperatures in the afternoon are between 11 and 13 degrees. Further information can be found at met.ie.

Where once there was hope – now not so sure

And so we are back. We hope. Increasing numbers and the real prospect of Level 5 restrictions cast doubt.

Then on May 1st, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar hoped that a GAA championship would take place. A reduction in Covid numbers and the start of club tariffs across the country gave hope that we would actually have a pre-Christmas race for provincial and All-Ireland honors.

We’re not so sure about the rising numbers across the island. The second wave has arrived.

A cancellation of the GAA championships would make it highly unlikely that it could take place anytime in 2021. It’s more likely that the leagues could close in the first few months of next year if they go bad from increased restrictions.

Decisions, no doubt, for the Croke Park realtors, in collaboration with the government and health officials.

At the moment the games go on.

DEPARTMENT 1

What we do know is that Meath will descend. If Mayo loses to Galway in Tuam, there is a risk that he will end his extended stint in the top division.

Padraig Joyce’s tribesmen were the most noticeable prior to the lockdown. Last weekend, Jim Guinness had given some advice before the resumption. No specific word on whether it was just a one-off, but Joyce, a former Donegalman college team-mate, told TG4, “He’s the best performance coach in the country. He was there and he did it and he’s very relevant to GAA as we know.

Galway leads the top tier

“He won the All-Ireland as a manager. It was a perfect fit and a piece of cake for me to be honest with you. ”

After Galway won their first National League title in 39 years, Joyce has to do without County Champions Moycullen players after confirmed Covid-19 cases at the club.

GALWAY XV

Of course, Galway-Mayo could be a rehearsal for the Connacht Finals on November 15, and the Donegal-Tyrone clash on the banks of the Finn River is the appetizer for the Ulster quarter-finals. League points are vital for both of them, however, if Mayo lands the loot in Tuam.

Relegation worries will also affect Monaghan if they get useless from their encounter with Inniskeen against Kerry.

DEPARTMENT 2

The Armagh v Roscommon winner receives a Division 1 ticket for the next year.

Leading up to the resumption, much attention was paid to Fermanagh’s request to the Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC) to postpone the game with Clare based on 10 players who tested positive for coronavirus and another seven isolated panel members. Many of these players won’t emerge from self-isolation until the morning of the Ennis tie.

Fermanagh may not be in full strength en route to Clare

The Ernesiders could form a team with multiple players under the age of 20 knowing that a loss will make them relegated.

Jack O’Connor will not want to get into a relegation battle in his first year in charge of Kildare. The date with Cavan in Newbridge was supposed to be sharp, as was the meeting of Westmeath and Laois in Mullingar.

DEPARTMENT 3

Cork’s quick escape from the third division would come with a win over Louth, a result that would spell the relegation of Wee County. After that, the rebels will focus on a semi-final against Kerry in Münster. A match they have planned for the whole year.

However, Ciarán Sheehan will not be involved after knee surgery.

The 29-year-old returned to the Rebels earlier this year after spending six years in Australia after his hopes of becoming a Carlton AFL starter were largely marred by injuries.

After some impressive early league games before lockdown, Sheehan was believed to lead the line for Cork, but knee surgery means he won’t be in it.

Cork has been unbeaten so far

Rebel boss Ronan McCarthy also has to plan without Tomás Clancy after the Fermoy man tore his calf and injured his Achilles tendon at the club earlier this month.

Down and Longford are expected to fight for the remaining promotion spot. On paper, the mourners seem to have an easier job this weekend when they face Leitrim at home while the Midlanders travel to Derry.

The result of the Tipperary-Offaly tie should give us a somewhat clearer, if not unambiguous, idea of who else could face the fall to the bottom row.

DEPARTMENT 4

Due to coronavirus restrictions, London is no longer involved, but five teams are still in the running for promotion. That number could be reduced after this round of the game as championship leaders Limerick Wexford receive, now without Paul Galvin. Wicklow welcomes Antrim to Aughrim, while former Sligo boss Niall Carew is taking over Carlow, who welcomes the Yeatsmen to Cullen Park.
