In the ruins of his destroyed home in Nagorny Karabakh, Gennady Avanisyan, the seventieth man, found nothing to say except the phrase “Damn Erdogan.”

On Saroyan Street No. 28 in the provincial capital Nagorno Karabakh Separatist, there was a large and beautiful house composed of several floors, with a wooden courtyard and a vine bearing black grapes. But almost nothing remains of this stately home on a posh street in Stepanakert.

“I renovated this house with my own hands over two years, and the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, destroyed it in two seconds with his bombs,” says Avanisyan.

The seventies-mustachioed man climbed over the enormous pile of rubble, what was left of his house that collapsed onto what was inside.

The man, who wears a dark wool hat and holds a shovel in his hand, tries to search for his belongings in the rubble between pieces of twisted sheet metal, the remains of the building’s roof and memories of his past life.

The house was bombed a week ago by the forces Azerbaijan. Gennady has visited him for the first time since, to try to recover some of his possessions.
