The latest Apple iPhone operating system ($ 699 on Amazon), iOS 14, is now available for download, and it’s packed with useful new features to help you get things done faster and easier. The Shortcuts app in particular is seeing a major upgrade in the new OS, with more options to automate tasks so you can get your phone to do what you need it to without moving the muscles.

Here’s how the new shortcut feature works, so that you can get started as soon as you install iOS 14 on your iPhone.

What is the Shortcuts app?
Siri Shortcuts is an app that lets you automate specific tasks or task sequences that you can launch with a single click or Siri voice command. If you know you want to mute your phone for 30 minutes a day while reading, for example, you can create a shortcut, so all you have to say is “Siri, no timer.”

Noise (or whatever you prefer). Or you may want to set a shortcut so that when your phone reaches a certain battery level, Siri will automatically reduce screen brightness and stop location services to save battery.

Apple introduced Shortcuts in iOS 12. The app is included by default, and it’s easy to get started. In iOS 14, open the app, click the Automation tab at the bottom and click Create Personal Automation. You can also set up automatic systems that work for everyone in your home.

What’s new in Shortcuts in iOS 14?
Shortcuts engineer Daniel Hsu said during a WWDC session in June about new features, in the past, you might have had to switch to the Shortcuts app to complete a task. In iOS 14, shortcuts would run smoothly in the background, and only prompt you if you needed to enter

any information. If you have a shortcut to Calculate Tips, for example it will prompt you to enter an invoice.

New folders make it easy to find and keep track of shortcuts. And you’ll finally be able to use the Shortcuts app on Apple Watch with WatchOS 7 as well.

IOS 14 also has more options to automate tasks, letting you trigger actions based on triggers such as time of day, location access, or when opening an app. You can set up a shortcut so that if you open a journal app, for example, your phone automatically goes into Do Not Disturb mode and starts your writing playlist from Apple Music.

The new operating system allows you to run shortcuts with more actions, such as opening an email or message, closing an app, or connecting your phone to its charger. It also supports more automatic shortcuts that do not require an action from you, such as giving you a weather report and starting a playlist at a certain time in the morning, or stopping applications from running when the phone enters low power mode. You can customize your shortcuts (automatic or otherwise) just as you want from the app.
