Trump, “Kandaka” and Navalny .. Who will win the Nobel Peace...

I wrote – Rana Osama:

Among the more than 300 nominees for the Nobel Peace Prize, the most famous in the world, several well-known personalities have surfaced, one of which is likely to be chosen for this prestigious award, which has sparked controversy on many occasions over the criteria for giving it.

Alfred Nobel founded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1895, one of 6 awards that also include literature, physics, chemistry, medicine, psychology and economic sciences. Last year, it was awarded to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, in recognition of his efforts to end a two-decade conflict with neighboring Eritrea.

The prize that ends the Nobel season, the only one awarded in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, usually raises a storm of speculation fueled by the secrecy surrounding the list of candidates for at least half a century.

Given that the winner is chosen from a secret list of 318 candidates, the American “Time” magazine said it is not usually easy to speculate on his name, and it is planned to be announced tomorrow, Friday. Earlier, the Nobel Peace Committee in Norway announced that the candidates include 210 individuals and 107 organizations, and said that this is the fourth highest number of candidates ever.

The following is a review of some of the potential winners of the award for this year:

World Health Organization

1

Covid 19 dominated headlines in global and Arab media, talks and political debates in 2020, and reshaped the way people travel, work and interact in all societies. Therefore, it would not be surprising that the World Health Organization became the most likely candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The World Health Organization has been at the forefront of global health centers and agencies in responding to the epidemic: from declaring Covid 19 a global pandemic on March 11th, to developing public health guidelines, and strengthening the capacities of countries most vulnerable to the disease. During this year, the international organization sent delegations to countries as diverse as Turkmenistan and Iran to support their response to the Coronavirus.

However, this does not rule out serious missteps by the organization as well. Global health has been criticized for its late recommendation on the need to wear masks, and for its reliance on misleading information from the Chinese government about virus warnings, such as ophthalmologist Li Wenliang, and its marginalization of Taiwan.

US President Donald – who is facing criticism for his disastrous handling of the pandemic – has also repeatedly blamed China and global health for the spread of Corona. In April, it was announced that the United States would cut funding to the international organization, in a move described by the editor of the Lancet medical journal as a “crime against humanity”.

Greta Thunberg

2

Among the nominees for that award, whose owner wins more than a million dollars, is the 17-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, and perhaps the reason behind her nomination despite her young age is her tireless work, as many see, to open politicians and decision-makers their eyes to the global climate crisis.

The Swedish teenager, Time magazine’s personality of the year for 2019, won what is known as the “Alternative Nobel Prize” for her work on climate change. She was the most favored of predictors for the Nobel Prize last year, for her leadership of the global youth movement against climate change. This year, her name was listed among the highly likely winners of the award.

Jacinda Ardern

3

The first televised debate between US presidential candidates, Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden, punctuated the insults and boycotts. In New Zealand, by contrast, Jacinda Ardern, the world’s youngest prime minister ever, had a vigorous debate over politics with opposition leader Judith Collins.

Media said the two near-simultaneous debates showed “contrasting patterns”. Ardern was widely praised for the essence of her leadership and her strong reaction – and sympathetic at the same time – to the Christchurch massacre in New Zealand, which made her a nomination for the award for 2019.

This year, the New Zealand Prime Minister won global acclaim for her government’s rapid response to COVID-19, and one of the lowest deaths from the virus in the world. But her country’s failure to participate in major global treaties may reduce its chances of winning the award, according to TIME.

Donald Trump

4

US President Donald Trump has said, on more than one occasion, that he believes he is the most deserving of a Nobel Peace Prize. Last January, during a rally in Ohio, he told his supporters that the 2019 prize given to Abiy Ahmed should have gone to him instead.

In 2018, Trump asserted that he deserves the award for his efforts in persuading North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to give up nuclear weapons. However, a recent confidential UN report showed that North Korea is pressing ahead with its nuclear weapons program.

This year, the White House said that Trump was nominated for the award for his leadership in mediating what was known as the “Abraham Accords,” which witnessed the official normalization of relations between the UAE and Bahrain with Israel. A signing ceremony held last month gave Trump the opportunity to present his “peace plan in the Middle East” – known in the media as the Deal of the Century – as a victory, despite its failure to provide a solution to the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Lujain Al-Hathloul

5

Saudi authorities detained Loujain Al-Hathloul – along with several women’s rights activists – in May 2018, on charges related to espionage and intelligence for foreign parties and compromising the country’s security.

This came just one month before the kingdom lifted its long ban on women driving.

Other names

6

Candidates include the Black Lives Important Movement for its role in focusing global attention on systemic racism and police brutality, the Press Freedom Watch to protect journalists, Reporters Without Borders, and multilateral bodies such as the European Union and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. And Refugees Organization of the United Nations.

Other nominated individual names include: The British naturalist and director David Attenborough, and the Sudanese activist “Icon of the Revolution” Alaa Salah, nicknamed “Kendaka the Revolution” and became a symbol of the protests that led to the overthrow of the regime of former President Omar al-Bashir after a rule that lasted for nearly 30 years, along with the Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny.

7

German Left Party lawmakers nominated Edward Snowden for exposing large-scale surveillance programs in the US, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, and former US military intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning, who worked with Assange to leak classified documents in 2010.

Previous award winners

8

Among the prize winners is former US President Barack Obama, for his “distinguished efforts to enhance international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”

It was also harvested by former US President Jimmy Carter, education activist Malala Yusufzai, the European Union, the United Nations, former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and Mother Teresa.

9
