A Turkish helicopter crashed on Monday near the Iraqi-Turkish border, media reports said. Initial reports suggested the craft had been shot down, although there was no official confirmation on the incident.

The aircraft came down near the Iraqi town of Haftanin, about 15 kilometres from the border, Sky News Arabia said, citing local sources.

Al Hadath news channel said the helicopter's crew had been killed in the crash.

There was no immediate confirmation of the incident from Turkish or Iraqi officials.

The reported crash comes amid a Turkish military air and land offensive against Kurdish militants in northern Iraq that was launched on June 17.

Turkey's operation has been condemned by Iraq, which has twice summoned Turkey’s ambassador to lodge a protest.
