Keegan-Michael Key on playing Meryl Streep’s love interest in ‘The Prom’

Keegan-Michael Key will appear opposite Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Corden and Kerry Washington in the upcoming Netflix Original The prom. The Ryan Murphy production – based on the Broadway musical of the same name – follows a group of Great White Way cast members who are looking for a little bit of good, but not too unattainable PR.

So they go to Indiana to help a lesbian high school girl who is being prevented from attending her prom. The liberal New Yorkers who want to strengthen their negative public image find their hearts on the way. You are helping this young girl in a conservative city – one who doesn’t see her hatefulness and hypocrisy.

During an interview with Conan O’Brien, Key discussed what it’s like to work across from Streep, delving specifically into her romantic arc with her character as well as their mutual kiss.

Key tells O’Brien about his wife’s very weird reaction to the discovery that her husband would kiss Streep in the movie. Key said:

We share a kiss. We have a kiss in the movie. And my wife knows what I do for a living. She’s in the store … And I said, “Oh, I’m going to kiss Meryl Streep.” And she says, “You better get this DNA! She said, “Get this DNA!”
