Netflix ‘latest anime’ Blood of Zeus’ is taking the world by storm, but fans are excited to see if Heron and Seraphim are real characters from Greek mythology.

From heartbreaking dramas and hilarious comedies to adrenaline-pumping thrillers, there are hundreds of awesome anime series to watch on Netflix right now.

The latest addition to the genre, the Greek mythology anime Blood of Zeus, is a worldwide hit just a day after it premiered on the streaming platform.

Now fans of the series are wondering whether the protagonist Heron and the antagonist Seraphim are actually based on real characters from Greek mythology.

Is Heron based on real Greek mythology?

  • No, it does not seem that the character of the heron from the blood of Zeus existed in Greek mythology, but the heron bird has strong mythological symbolism.

While Blood of Zeus’ Heron does not appear in traditional Greek mythology, Zeus had a number of children who were either divine themselves or demigods with extraordinary abilities.

Zeus had between 54 and 100 children, the most famous being Perseus (who killed Medusa), Apollo (god of truth) Athena (goddess of war), Hephaistos (God of blacksmithing), Helen of Troy (the catalyst for the Battle of Troy), Hermes (Herald of the Gods), Orion (the giant hunter) and Minos (the King of Crete and Judge of the Dead).

The character of the heron in the blood of Zeus is therefore likely to be a combination of the remaining, lesser-known children of Zeus, i.e. a reinterpretation of traditional Greek mythology and not a direct adaptation.

Interestingly, the name of our protagonist in Blood of Zeus has intriguing symbolism, with heron birds appearing multiple times in the ancient stories.

The Greeks saw heron birds as messengers of the gods who represented the regeneration of life, their status being linked to the view that “the gods are watching”.

The birds in particular played an important role in the Greek epic “The Odyssey”, where Athena sends a heron on his way home as a sign that she is still watching over him.

Is Seraphim based on a real Greek mythology?

  • No, the character of Seraphim in Netflix’s Blood of Zeus does not come from Greek mythology, but a “Seraph” is a heavenly being from Jewish, Christian and Islamic literature.

These heavenly beings are among the highest angels in heaven, are traditionally depicted with two or three pairs of wings and serve as “God’s throne guardians”.

Interestingly a Seraph (Plural seraphim) is known as “burning” and is usually depicted in a fiery red color. However, they sit next to another type of angel in religious literature that ‘Cherubs ‚traditionally painted in dark blue to represent the sky.

In Blood of Zeus, Seraphim has fiery red scars that tear through his dark blue skin – combining both colors commonly associated with the Seraph and Cherubas well as riding a fearsome winged creature.

Much like the character of the heron in the blood of Zeus, Seraphim is likely a reinterpretation of several characters from ancient scriptures (Seraph and Cherub), but it’s interesting that these come from Christian, Jewish, and Islamic texts rather than traditional Greek mythology.

Blood of Zeus will be available to stream on Netflix starting October 27thth, 2020.
