New Delhi, October 18 (IANS): UK-based Indian student leader Riddi Viswanathan, a graduate of the University of Manchester, was recognized with the 2020 Global International Education Award for her contributions to various student communities, particularly for her important role in campaigning and combating hate crimes in UK universities.
Riddi has held leadership positions in the UK as a former Diversity Officer and first full-time International Students ‘Officer at the University of Manchester Students’ Union. She was also elected as the 2019-20 Overseas Representative for the National Union of Students (NUS) UK, where she became the first Indian to represent over 400,000 foreign students from over 192 countries in the UK.
Born in Puducherry, Riddi shared the Pioneer Alumni of the Year award with Thomson Ch’ng from Curtin University, Australia.
The Pioneer Awards are the only global awards that recognize innovations and successes in the international educational world. This year the awards had a total of 18 categories.
When Riddi Viswanathan won the award, he told IANS: “I am really grateful to the University of Manchester, my student association, my family and friends for always encouraging me. This is definitely a great moment for me as we celebrate international education, but the challenges migrant students around the world face due to the spread of the pandemic have somehow faded the celebration. We can truly celebrate international education when all students, regardless of the color of their passports, have equal access to education worldwide. “
“I’m happy to hear that Riddi won this award. She is so deserved and a huge recognition for all the work she has done for various student communities, ”said Nancy Rothwell, President and Vice Chancellor of the University of Manchester.
