Guy Sebastian talks about the new album TRUTH, COVID-19 setbacks and...

A year ago, Guy Sebastian felt the pressure.

His song ‘Choir’ was named Song of the Year for the ARIA Music Award – the night’s biggest award – but he couldn’t take full advantage of the moment as he also hosted and performed the ceremony.

“I was caught in this whirlwind of nerves and fear,” he tells 9Honey Celebrity. “There was so much fear involved in actually performing, and I was just very worried and wanted to do a good job, and I didn’t really have time to process the fact that I was nominated.”

He wasn’t just nominated. It won both Song of the Year and Best Video.

Guy Sebastian has been in the music industry for 17 years.

This year he has two more ahead of him: Best Video and Best Male Artist for his song ‘Standing By You’.

“For me, the ARIAs have always represented something that is really sacred in this industry,” he says. “It’s the time when we all unite and come together and so, yeah. I don’t take a nomination lightly. It’s an amazing thing and something I’m excited about because if it doesn’t happen – if you go for years without a nomination – it sucks. “

Sebastian still has a reason to celebrate. He just released his ninth studio album, TRUTH

“In my opinion TRUTH is literally just a collection of songs that have been timestamped in recent years, “he explains.” And I think that’s different from any other album there. I think a lot of other albums, I sit down to write for the album while most of the songs on this album come from real things that I’ve had to process through song and real feelings and things that I try to do to understand.

“It started with a song called ‘Before I Go’, which was a very emotional battle song for me. It was almost like I wasn’t letting labels and things that were said or done or whatever define me and set a ceiling on what I can do and where my music can go. “

While curating an album is usually a tedious process, Sebastian says he felt there was a lot of momentum while writing tracks TRUTH

“Normally I would write 10 songs before I even get to a place where one of them becomes something that I will record for the album, while on the first day I wrote ‘Before I Go’, on the second day I wrote ‘Believer ” Which is also on the album, “he says. “And then that same week I wrote ‘In a World’ and ‘Love on Display’.

“I started with songs that I really loved and that I ended up making, and that kind of gave me a lot of confidence.”

This album is very personal for the 38 year old.

“There were obviously challenging moments,” he says. “Some of the breakups that have happened have been very harsh and surrounded by really harsh circumstances, and feelings of betrayal and so much to deal with, and then feelings of loss, loss of loved ones.

“And then things where I tried to write songs for myself, but also for others who felt isolated and overwhelmed by this whole pandemic. It has been just so crowded for the past two or three years. There is no middle ground. “

“It’s just a kind of place where we’ll process and talk at the end of the night,” he says. “Yesterday I was thinking back to all of the conversations we had had over the years and there were some extreme things that we wanted to process and go through. Like legal things and things about people who have been sick. It’s just. This life is so full and on top of that we have an eight year old and a six year old and we try to juggle that. It was just a really full time.

“And that’s how I feel like TRUTH is all the truths that I learned along the way and also recognized the power of truth, and all of the clichés we hear about the truth are true. That it sets you free, that it comes out in the end, all of these things we hear about the truth. It’s a very powerful ally when you are on the right side. I’ve learned that it’s the easiest way to live. If you want to keep life simple, be honest and honest and life will be a lot easier.

Sebastian’s greatest lesson in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic is to “prioritize” the simple things that are often taken for granted.

“I haven’t seen my parents in a very long time. You’re in Adelaide. I haven’t seen some loved ones that I’m usually so used to just seeing all the time. My brother is about to have a baby and I am very, very close to my family. I would die for my brothers. I love my brothers. I love my family, even now I am sitting here not sure if I can travel to see my brother’s baby. “Says Sebastian. “There are just such weird things to navigate and I feel like it taught us what is important in life. I think you can even see it on social media.

“I don’t know how many of us actually analyzed this, but before COVID-19, social media was really important in the sense that it was just a highlight role, and see how much more real people are, I feel like People, they don’t long for that stuff anymore. “

He jokes, “Not that it stopped me. I’m addicted to shopping for clothes so it’s a bad habit. I carry them around the house for myself. I feel like even when I’m online or whatever on social media, people aren’t as flat as they were. I hope it doesn’t go back to that. I think that’s a really positive thing. People have changed. “

Since then he’s made nine albums, released 22 top 20 singles, won 16 ARIA awards, married his sweetheart, and is the father of Hudson (eight) and Archer (six).

“I would say, ‘Don’t try to please everyone.’ I think I was always very upset when I knew that I did something that hurt someone or that it upset someone, “says Sebastian. “I was just so obsessed with having everyone like me or something, this weird obsession with not pissing everyone off, and so I would just do things outside of the character just to not upset anyone, or not to speak my mind or not for to stand up for myself.

“And I think if I could say to myself, ‘Dude, people are going to love you and that’s normal. People will stand behind you and support you. A whole lot of people don’t really care. And then there are some people who will hate you no matter what you do. And that’s just life. “

Sebastian says he tried to change what others think of him instead of putting his energy elsewhere.

“Just go through life and be you … and focus your energy on the people who are to you,” he says. “Because we end up reacting to trolls and people and talking to our partners about it at night and saying, ‘Oh, I can’t believe they said this or that.’

“We can use our time much better if we focus this energy on the people who are good for us. And I wish I had learned it a little earlier. That would have saved me a lot of stress. “

What does the future look like for Guy Sebastian?

“I would like to play better golf,” he laughs. “Oddly enough, the more I practice, the worse I get.”

Guy Sebastian will start his TRUTH National Tour between November and December 2021. Tickets will be available from October 16 through Ticketek & Ticketmaster.
