Art week with Judy Murphy

Sharon O’Grady, Galway County’s Arts Commissioner, was recently honored at the Clifden Arts Festival for her continued work and commitment to promoting the arts in Connemara. Sharon was presented with a limited edition print, the work of Inis Mór artist Seán Ó Flaithearta, which he created for a new show, Carrying the Songs. This multidisciplinary project was presented during the Clifden Festival at Interface, a unique art space in Connougha’s Lough Inagh Valley that once housed a salmon hatchery

Carrying the Songs, developed between March and September, combined the art of storytelling and the phenomenon of “Dúirt bean liom go ndúirt bean lei” by exploring ideas of memory, place, voice communication and rumors. It was opened during the Clifden Arts Festival

Interface founder Alannah Robins’ idea, Carrying the Songs, began in March last year in the Aran Islands with a story told by 18-year-old Liam Ó Flaithearta, a great-great-nephew and namesake of the well-known writer. It ended in Istanbul last month. The original story was told and then retold more than 300 times in her trip through Europe, and the final version was very different from the original.

On its journey it was translated between known and minority languages. These included English, Irish, Scottish Gaelic, Welsh, French, Breton, Occitan, Basque, Catalan, Kikongo, Swabian, Swiss German, German, Dutch, Flemish, Frisian, Danish, Swedish, Arabic, Norwegian, Norrsjö Bonska, Samiska, Meänkeli , Finnish, Estonian, Mulgi, Võru, Seto, Livonian and Latvian.
