The timeless story of The Wizard of Oz will be retold from Dorothy’s famous dog perspective in a new film confirmed today. It will be far from the first time the 1939 classic, based on L. Frank Baum’s 1900 book, has been rebooted for modern audiences. There was the dark sequel from 1985 Return to Oz, animated and muppetized versions, Sam Raimis Blockbuster 2013 Oz, the great and mightyand among other things an abandoned Todd McFarlane version. But the new version will be the first to place Toto – acidic as “your little dog” by the wicked witch – in front and in the middle.

Deadline Reports Mozart in the jungle Co-creator Alex Timbers will direct based on the book Toto: The amazing story of the Wizard of Oz, vanished by the dog by Michael Morpurgo. The Warner Bros. Animation project, first developed in 2018, will be a musical, scripted by John August, the prolific writer of Big fish, Corpse bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the 2019s Aladdin.

The Toto film will be the first Timbers feature film to be directed by John Mulaney’s stand-up comedy special Kid Gorgeous – but Timbers is actually an extremely accomplished director for Broadway, with productions like Red Mill! Das Musical, American utopia, and Die Pee-Wee Herman Show under his belt. Jared Stern (author of The LEGO Batman movie and Netflix Green eggs and ham) will serve as executive producer, while former head of Tim Burton Productions, Derek Frey, will serve as producer. There is no release date for Toto yet The Wizard of Oz Headlights.
