The Egyptian media announced that Egypt achieved a record number of liquefied natural gas exports during 2021, as it exported more than 5 million tons.
According to a source in the petroleum sector, the local production of natural gas amounted to about 6.7 billion cubic feet per day, pointing out that the growth occurred due to the effectiveness of the sector’s strategy in exploiting Egypt’s geographical location as a hub for gas trading and trading in the eastern Mediterranean region.
The source explained that this continuous growth in the volume of exports is due to the restart of the liquefaction complex in “Damietta” last February, after the conclusion of a settlement agreement between the parties owning the complex, which has a production capacity of about 5 million tons annually, and after it was suspended for about 8 years, in addition to the continued operation of the “Idku” complex, which has a production capacity of about 7.2 million tons per year.
Egypt succeeded in operating both complexes during the last months of 2021 at their full design capacity of 1.6 billion cubic feet per day, taking advantage of the surplus available for local consumption; Due to the decline in gas consumption in power plants in the winter season.
Egypt has exported dozens of shipments of liquefied gas from the two collectors, which amounted to more than 5 million tons, and shipments of this gas reached several markets in Europe and Asia.
