The head of the Egyptian Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research, Gad El-Kady, revealed the reasons for the increase in earthquake registration during the last period in Egypt.
Al-Qadi said during a press conference, “The announcement of the presence of almost daily earthquakes is due to the increase in the capabilities and efficiency of seismic stations and researchers, in addition to urban expansion.”
For his part, Dr. Sayed Shaaban, head of the National Network for Earthquakes, said that there have been great efforts from the Egyptian state during the past years to avoid the danger of earthquakes, explaining that Egypt began establishing a national earthquake network after earthquakes occurred in 1992.
Shaaban stressed that the national network has great flexibility in following up and monitoring earthquakes, noting that “there is an alternative network in Aswan, in case of any damage to the national network in Cairo.”
He pointed out that Egypt started working on establishing a national earthquake network, which was completed in 2002, adding that Egypt has 80 seismic monitoring stations and 30 earthquake monitoring stations.
He explained that there are three different ways to collect earthquake data, by using radio networks, then using the satellite to transmit earthquake data, and finally using the fourth generation technology to transmit data.
The head of the National Earthquake Network in Egypt stressed that in the event of an earthquake, all parts of the network in Egypt will not be affected due to the presence of the fourth generation technology.
