The World Health Organization announced that only 13 African countries have succeeded in carrying out the task put forward by the organization, which is to vaccinate 10% of the population of each of these countries against the Corona virus until the end of this month.
A statement issued by the organization today, Sunday, said: “13 African countries have achieved the task at hand in vaccinating the population against Covid-19 disease. The current shortage of vaccines constitutes a serious obstacle to the implementation of the vaccination program in many regions of the continent.”
The statement stated that the most advanced African country in terms of the proportion of people immunized against Corona is Seychelles (72% of the total population), followed by Mauritius (55%), Morocco (44%), Tunisia (21%), and Comoros and Cape Verde (18% in both of them). In the southern part of the continent, the leadership in this field is attributed to Zimbabwe (13%) and South Africa (12%).
Machidiso Moeti, the WHO’s regional director for Africa, said recently that the goal of vaccinating 40% of the African population against the Corona virus by next December seems out of reach.
She noted that the ban on the export and storage of vaccines is slowing the delivery of vaccines to Africa.
Moeti warned that slow vaccination in Africa, where more than 8 million cases of “Covid-19” and more than 204,800 deaths have been reported, could lead to the emergence of highly contagious variants.
