A pharmacist found black bodies inside a package of Moderna vaccine

Japan has suspended use of a shipment of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine after a foreign substance was found inside a glass bottle of the vaccine.

Authorities say a pharmacist saw black substances inside one package of the vaccine in Kanagawa Prefecture.

About 3,790 people had already received doses of this consignment of vaccine, and the authorities suspended use of the rest of the consignment.

This comes less than a week after Japan suspended the use of about 1.63 million doses of Moderna due to contamination.

The pharmacist found black bodies while examining one of the doses in order to monitor the presence of any foreign substances before using the vaccine.

The local distributor of the vaccine collected the suspected contaminated glass containers.

According to local media reports, there is no evidence so far of any health risks from the potentially contaminated vaccine.

Last week, Takeda, which sells and distributes the vaccine in Japan, suspended three batches of the vaccine after finding “foreign substances” in some doses of a shipment of about 560,000 glass bottles.

The Spanish drug company, Rovi, which stores the vaccine, said in a statement that a manufacturing line in Spain may be the cause of the problem.

She added that she is conducting an investigation.

On Tuesday, the Japanese health minister said that foreign substances found in vaccines in southern Okinawa prefecture were caused by incorrectly inserting needles into the glass bottle.

Japan is battling a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases as it hosts the Paralympic Games.

Vaccination processes in the country are proceeding at a relatively slow pace, with more than 40 percent of Japanese people receiving full vaccinations, and about 50 percent receiving a single dose.
