A CAVAN general practitioner said her practice has been “incredibly busy”, drawing over 30 people a day – As Covid-19 cases continue to rise in the county.

Dr. Dara Hume, a general practitioner at Drumalee Family Practice in Cavan Town, said “people are scared” as the county’s incidence rate was the highest in the country at 385.9 cases per 100,000 people.

Dr. Hume told RTE Radio One’s Morning Ireland, “We’re incredibly busy right now, I have to say.

“Really, as of last week, my goodness, things have only just started in our area.

“I mean, I would say more than 30 patients a day in our practice with two doctors. The phones bounce.

“People are concerned and people are afraid.”

When asked why the situation in Cavan is so bad, the doctor replied, “Well, I can only go through my practice, but there really seem to be two very large cohorts.

“One is large private gatherings and the second is large public gatherings – celebrations and socializing.

“They seem to be the two main clusters in our region.”

TURNAROUND TESTEN

On the subject of contract tracking, Dr. Hume: “We have around 24 hours to test, which I think is pretty good for the community.

“And I’d say 48 hours turnaround time for the results, but the big delays are in the contact tracking.

“I suppose when someone is in close contact they are advised to stay home and still isolate themselves. Therefore, the actual delay in contact tracing is not a primary issue.

“However, if they do not know that they have been a close contact, then they will not be aware of their need to isolate themselves.

“So that’s one of the bigger problems.”
