Mask recall for toxic chemical
The manufacturer Media Chain Products GmbH from Berlin has started a recall for masks. Aniline has been detected in the mouthguard that was sold at the Müller drugstore chain. This substance is suspected of being carcinogenic.
As Müller Handels GmbH & Co. KG writes on its website, the manufacturer Media Chain Products is recalling the black 7-month protective mask viral Protect in sizes M and L. Reason for the measure: aniline was detected in the binding tape in individual samples. There is a potential health hazard.
Do not use masks anymore
Affected by the recall is the 7-month protective mask viral Protect from the manufacturer Media Chain Products in sizes M and L in black, with the EAN numbers: 4260537362347 and 4260537362354 and the batch number: T 100406.The product has been sold since October 30, 2020.
“The recall, which was initially carried out as a precaution, was due to the unpleasant smell of the article. At this point in time, based on the test analyzes commissioned, there were no indications that could have justified a risk, ”writes the company.
“After more extensive chemical analyzes, aniline has been detected in the binding tape in individual samples, so that the further recall is now being carried out,” it continues.
Customers are asked to check whether your article has been affected and to stop using it immediately. The affected masks can be returned in any Müller branch. The purchase price will also be reimbursed without presenting the receipt.
Possible trigger for bladder cancer
According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR), according to Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP), aniline is classified as a mutagen (class 2, “can presumably cause genetic defects”) and a carcinogen (class 2, “can presumably cause cancer”) ) classified.
In humans, the substance has been discussed as a trigger for bladder cancer since the end of the 18th century.
According to the BfR, an increased incidence of bladder cancer has also been demonstrated in modern studies in workers who were exposed to various chemicals, including aniline. However, the effect could not be clearly assigned to aniline. (ad)
