The Russian newspaper “Izvestia” reported that scientists from the Department of Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology, using computer simulations, reached the conclusion that piperine in black pepper is able to impede the work of the parts of the coronavirus responsible for reproduction and penetration in the human body. At the newspaper’s request, Russian experts evaluated their colleagues’ research.

In this context, Stanislav Utstavnov, deputy head of the Laboratory for the Analysis of Population Health Indicators and the Digitization of Health Care, explained that the described mechanism may work well not only in a computer model, but also in life, but this must be confirmed by real experiments. He pointed out that if we are talking about developing a medical product, then establishing the efficacy and safety of its action necessarily requires confirmation in laboratory animals and three stages of clinical trials, including healthy volunteers and patients.

In turn, Maria Fedunova, director of the Institute of Biology and Biomedicine at the University of Lobachevsky, indicated that most traditional medicine prescriptions for colds and viral infections are linked to the presence of anti-bacterial and immunostimulating properties of substances found in various food products. She said black and red pepper are among the record holders for the number of different ingredients with similar properties.

The expert noted the spice’s ability to stimulate the immune system, suppress inflammatory reactions and aid in the absorption of trace elements and vitamins. This allows the product to be used as an antiviral and antitussive agent. Indicated that pepper at the same time is harmful to people suffering from digestive problems. In this case, nutritional supplementation with piperine will be the way out, and this will reduce the side effects of the product.
