Corona outbreak in Doel nuclear power plant: already at least 26...

At least 26 employees of the Doel nuclear power plant are infected with the corona virus. Engie Electrabel confirms this.

To prevent the outbreak from causing too many critical staff to drop out, employees must work from home whenever possible. The employees who tested positive are quarantined and the nuclear power plant is conducting contact tracing to further map the corona outbreak.

The evolution of the number of infections is forcing management to take measures so that the number of infections in the nuclear power plant does not increase further. Of the 26 infected employees, 12 people work for Engie Electrabel, the 14 others carry out assignments for external companies at the nuclear site. “The infected employees are all at home in quarantine,” says the management of the nuclear power plant.

The employees who drop out include staff members who fulfill important tasks in the nuclear power plant. Nevertheless, the management emphasizes that the safety of the nuclear power plant is not compromised for the time being. “Our absolute priority is to guarantee nuclear safety and to continue to contribute to security of supply.”

Quarantine

Every day, around 400 employees visit the site of the nuclear power plant in Doel. To prevent the virus from causing even more victims in the corridors, the 26 infected staff members were quarantined. Since the beginning of this week, all staff have to work from home as much as possible, if their position permits.

In order to keep strategically important infrastructure running, there are extensive plans to ensure that critical functions, such as checking the nuclear reactors or the maintenance of crucial technical installations, are not compromised.
